Turning Uneven Blocks Into Build-Ready Sites
Builders, renovation companies and owner builders come to us when a block will not take a slab the way it sits. We cut and step those sites so there is a level, stable platform to build on. We work to what the engineer has specified rather than what looks close enough on the day. That makes up much of our site benching work in Sydney, from tight infill blocks to sloping sites across the west and down the coast.
Get A Quote On Your Site Cut Or Benching Job
Lead time for a site cut in Sydney is generally around two to three weeks, although this can vary depending on our current workload. Book with us early and we will tell you honestly where you sit.
Why Builders Choose MRN Excavations For Site Benching
Benching a sloping block is straightforward work when the operator reads the plans properly and brings the right machine for the access. It gets expensive when they do not, and the builder is the one who bears the delay. Here is what you get when the job comes our way.
A Licensed Operator On Every Job
Mat holds a Cert III in civil foundations and a licence for underpinning and piering, number 384683C. He came up through landscaping, concreting and screw piers before starting MRN, 13+ years on the tools all up. He still operates the machine himself. You're not getting a quote from one person and a crew from another.
Quotes Off Plans
We'll quote straight off your plans. Once we have what we need, a comprehensive quote lands, and a deposit on acceptance locks the job in.
What Is Site Benching?
Site benching means preparing your site to start the construction of your house, whether it is a flat, sloping or stepped site.
We bench a site for three reasons. It keeps vertical faces short and stable. Each level gives you a flat area to work from. Water also has somewhere controlled to go, instead of running straight at the footings.
What Our Site Cut and Benching Work Includes
We use the same scope language you'll see on your plans, not generic labels.
Bulk Excavation & Site Cuts
Moving the volume and forming the pad or platform your build sits on is the first stage on almost every job. A site cut excavation can be anything from a shed pad through to a full house platform. This is a part of the broader bulk and detailed excavation work we do across Sydney.
Benching On Sloping Blocks
Where the plans call for stepped levels, we cut each bench to the height specified. We shape as we go so the machine keeps a working platform and the spoil stays manageable.
Detailed Excavation & Final Trim
This is the close tolerance work the concreter actually needs, and it covers drop edge beam excavation, strip footings and final trim. Where the foundation design calls for it, we also install screw piers across Sydney, so the footing work carries straight on from the cut.
Spoil Handling & Removal
We reuse material on site where it stacks up, and cart away what doesn't. Either way, spoil removal is organised as part of the job, not an afterthought.
When Does A Block Need Benching?
You usually need it when there’s a fall across the block, and the slab cannot go down until the ground sits at the level the engineer specified. A site cut means either a flat cut or a benched one, and the plans tell us which.
Common jobs we get called out to:
- New builds and sheds needing a level pad on a sloping site
- Knock-down rebuilds where the old slab sat on a stepped or filled block
- Granny flats going in out the back, usually with tight access
- Retaining work where the cut has to be right before the wall starts
- Any slab that cannot go down until the pad sits at the specified level

What Our Sydney Clients Say
Our clients trust us for our precise, reliable site benching on every job. See what Sydney builders and contractors have to say about working with us.
The Blocks We Work On
We are based at Tahmoor, and we cover Sydney, Wollondilly, Wollongong and the South Coast. This means that we are cutting three fairly different kinds of country in any given month. We're on sloping blocks through Macarthur and Wollondilly, tight infill sites across the Sydney basin, and escarpment falls through the Illawarra most weeks.
We've worked alongside Katana Foundations on screw pier jobs and helped deliver the Concord Golf Course floating solar farm. This is ground we already know well before we turn up to yours.
Ground Conditions That Change A Site Cut
- Sandstone and shale turn a straightforward dig into a rock job, and that changes both the method and the quote.
- Reactive clay through the western and south-western suburbs affects how the pad needs to be prepared.
- Sandy coastal soils closer to the coast won't hold a steep face.
- Narrow infill and battle-axe access dictate machine size before anything else gets decided.
- Wet weather can affect site access; some jobs still go ahead, others get rebooked.
Working In With Your Engineer & Approvals
We work on the levels given to us and the engineering drawings rather than eyeballing levels on site. Excavation in NSW sits under SafeWork NSW requirements. We work alongside your documentation and approvals rather than replacing them.
Knowing that a block in Camden behaves differently from one in Helensburgh is what keeps a job on the programme. Check the areas we service to confirm we cover your site.
How A Site Cut Or Benching Job Runs
No two blocks are the same, but every site cut in Sydney we take on follows the same six steps from your first call through to the follow-up.

Frequently Asked Questions About Site Benching In Sydney
What is site benching in excavation?
Site benching is the cutting of a slope into a series of level steps rather than one continuous face. Each step is short enough to stand up on its own and flat enough to work off, which is why it suits blocks too steep for a single flat platform.
At what depth does an excavation need benching?
No single depth applies to every site. It depends on the soil conditions and what the engineer specifies. As a general principle in Australian practice, a vertical face beyond about 1.5 metres needs some form of protection. Benching is one option. The soil report and the engineering drawings decide it, and excavation work in NSW falls under SafeWork NSW requirements.
What is the difference between benching and battering?
Benching cuts the slope into steps. Battering cuts it back as one continuous angled face. Battering needs more room across the block, while benching keeps the footprint tighter and gives you flat areas to work from.
How much does site benching cost in Sydney?
It depends on a few things like the volume of material and whether there's rock or shale involved. Other factors include site access and the machine size needed, and whether spoil can stay on site or has to be carted away. A site cut excavation on a clean, open block is a very different price to a stepped job in shale with a narrow entry. Send us the plans, and we will quote it properly.
Do you need the soil report and engineering before you can quote?
It makes the quote accurate, so we'd rather see it if you have it. We can still work off your plans alone in some cases. We'll tell you if a site visit is needed to confirm anything.
Can you get a machine into a tight or narrow site?
Yes. Our 1.7t and 2.8t machines are built for exactly this. Send us the access width and a few photos, and we'll match the right machine to your site.
Can you remove the excess dirt from the site?
Yes, we can organise that. Where material can be reused on site, we'll do that first, which saves you cart-away costs.
How long does a site cut and benching job take?
It depends on size, rock, and access. A straightforward residential pad is a very different job to a stepped site with rock in it, so timing varies job to job.
What happens if it rains on the day the job is booked?
Depending on the site access, we may still get it done. If we cannot, we rebook for the next available date and work around your programme rather than pushing on and turning the site into a mess. Wet weather is part of the game in this trade, and we would rather lose a day than hand back a pad you have to fix.
Can you build a retaining wall on the boundary in NSW?
Boundary retaining generally involves your neighbour and an approval pathway. The engineering and levels also need to be sorted before the wall goes in. We work to your builder's documentation and can advise on how the cut needs to be set up to support it. However, we don't handle the approvals ourselves.
