Most Common Lawn Diseases in Australia: What You Must Know

Anthracnose is a prevalent fungal disease in Australian lawns particularly during warm, humid weather. It causes irregularly shaped patches of dead or dying grass and can lead to severe thinning of the lawn if left untreated.

Fusarium is another fungal disease that thrives in hot and humid conditions. It typically appears as yellow or brown patches of grass. It starts as small, wet patches on the lawn. Gradually, the patch becomes bigger and discolours which will eventually cause your lawn’s leaves to die.

Helmo, also known as Helminthosporium, is a fungal disease that plagues many turfgrass species, especially in warm and humid climates. Characterised by small, circular spots with tan centres and dark border grass blades.

Pythium is a water mould that thrives in waterlogged soil or excessive moisture. It is recognisable by its slimy, water-soaked patches on the lawn that quickly turn yellow or brown. Pythium blight can rapidly spread, resulting in significant damage to the turf if left unchecked.

Lawn rust is a fungal disease characterised by the presence of orange to rust-coloured spores on grass blades. It typically occurs in late summer or early autumn when the weather is warm and humid. While not directly fatal, lawn rust weakens the grass, leading to a yellowish appearance, thinning, and poor growth of the turf.

Brown Patch is a lawn disease in Australia which is caused by Rhizoctonia species. It manifests as circular patches of brown or tan grass surrounded by a dark ring. Brown Patch is most active during warm, humid weather and can quickly spread throughout the lawn if not controlled.

Dollar spots are characterised by small, circular patches of grass resembling the shape of a dollar coin.  The Sclerotinia Homoeocarpa fungus causes dollar spot lawn disease and typically appears in late summer and early fall.

Fairy ring disease is characterised by circular formations of dark or fast-growing grass, often accompanied by a ring of mushrooms or toadstools on the outer edge. It is caused by various fungal species and affects lawns of all types.

Red Thread is a fungal lawn disease causing circular or irregular patches, featuring tan-coloured dead grass leaves mixed among healthy ones, giving a scorched appearance. It thrives in warm, humid conditions and is identified by red bands on grass blades. This lawn disease is caused by the Laetisaria Fuciformis fungus and is commonly seen in midsummer.

Snow mould disease is characterised by white, grey, or pink fuzz on lawns in colder regions during winter or early spring. While there is currently no known cure for snow mould lawn disease, proper watering can help prevent its transmission to unaffected areas.
